Man robs 5 at gunpoint
YOUNGSTOWN -- Five people told police they were robbed at gunpoint at 1:30 a.m. Saturday downtown. The people said they were walking on Hazel Street when they stopped in a parking lot between Federal and Wood streets. The lot is just blocks from the police station. A man came up, pulled out a handgun and said, "Give me your wallets, purses and jewelry and lay face down on the ground." The people did as told and the robber made off with a watch, $50, two cameras and some credit cards. The victims were a 28-year-old Copley, Ohio, man, a 24-year-old Girard woman, a 23-year-old Youngstown man, a 24-year-old New Castle man and a 22-year-old Berea woman.
Meeting in Hartford
HARTFORD -- Township trustees will meet at 8 p.m. Monday at the township building, 6901 state Route 305, to solicit ideas for the development of an area that will be left vacant when Hartford Elementary is razed in the fall. Students will be moving into a new school complex. Trustees want to hear suggestions of what to do with the township-owned land at state Routes 7 and 305 at the square. A basketball court and playground will remain when the building is demolished.
Three men shot all OK
YOUNGSTOWN -- Three Youngstown men said they were shot at 2 a.m. Saturday when a large fight broke out across the street from the Red Room, 2702 Market St. The men told police they had left the bar and were walking to their cars when a fight erupted and they were shot. Gary Scott, 18, of East Ravenwood Avenue, was shot in the shoulder and was in stable condition Saturday in St. Elizabeth Health Center. Patrick Riley, 20, of Idora Avenue, and Rashaud Robinson, 17, of East Judson Avenue, were treated at St. E's for gunshot wounds to the leg and hip, respectively.
Arson charge
YOUNGSTOWN -- Arturo Novoa, 20 of Cooper Street, was charged with aggravated arson and obstructing official business after a flaming object was thrown at a house on the same street at 11 p.m. Friday. Police said they arrived on the street after a report of BBs being shot at a house. They saw a man run across the street with a flaming object and throw it onto a porch. While the homeowner put out the fire with a fire extinguisher, police saw the man who threw the object run to a nearby house. Police went to that house and saw Novoa crawling out of a basemen window, reports said.
Two men beaten
YOUNGSTOWN -- Two men said they were beaten in the head with a baseball bat while trying to break up a fight at Minerva's Bar, 51 N. Meridian Road, at 2 a.m. Saturday. A 34-year-old Austintown man told police he and a 35-year-old Dublin, Ohio, man left the bar to break up a fight that involved the Austintown man's wife and some other women. A man came up to them, hit both of the victims with a bat, then drove off. Police said both men had severe cuts but refused treatment.
