Heritage Day observance to be at Niles museum



Displays relating to the history of Niles will be featured.
NILES -- The Niles Historical Society has planned its annual Heritage Day observance to be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 6 at the Ward-Thomas Museum, 503 Brown St.
The day's activities will include demonstrations, live music, a bake sale and tours. Antique cars will be displayed along the driveway, weather permitting.
For the first time in many years, the barn will be open to visitors during the event and will feature a display of antique tools.
Area artist Tom Harwood will exhibit his paintings under a tent near the Westenfield Room, which is the former carriage house between the barn and greenhouse. A replica of the White House, built by Louis Sayre of Southington and donated to the historical society in 2004, will be displayed in the Westenfield Room.
The 14 rooms of the of the museum are filled with antique furniture and memorabilia relating to the history of Niles, and among the featured items will be the society's "Ladies of the White House Gowns."
Lunch and lemon shakes will be available. Admission is $5 for adults and $2 for children, and proceeds will go toward the upkeep of the museum.
