BROWNS ROUNDUP \ News and notes
Tucker gets knee checked: Right offensive tackle Ryan Tucker left practice after less than one hour on Friday when his left knee flared up. Coach Romeo Crennel said Tucker was taken for an MRI at the Cleveland Clinic. "Ryan has several years on him," Crennel said of the 31-year-old. "Some of the players who have time on them have some injuries. Ryan just felt a little something and wanted to take a look at it. From a precautionary standpoint, we are going to take some pictures to make sure it's nothing serious." Tucker, a 10-year veteran, started all 16 games last season and has been the Browns' top offensive lineman since arriving as a free agent in 2002. A knee injury sidelined him for the final nine games in 2004, but one year earlier, he was the only Cleveland offensive starter to take part in every snap. After Tucker left, Kirk Chambers moved into his spot with the first-team offense.
Surgical unit: LeCharles Bentley had his knee surgically repaired on Friday by team physician Dr. Anthony Miniaci. "He [Miniaci] thought that it went well," Crennel said. "He's worked on quite a few of these guys. Unfortunately, some of the big-money guys. That lets you know that we have a lot of confidence in him. He has Kellen Winslow back on the field and we expect to have Braylon Edwards back on the field. That's two of three. After the surgery, hopefully, we'll get Bentley back on the field. We know that it's not going to be this year. We are optimistic." Crennel said it will take Bentley at least six months to recover from the injury, but there is no firm timetable yet for when he might be back. "It's probably going to be a year. Sometime next year, we'll probably find out," he said. "I would say that it's going to be at least six months. Sometime in February, we'll have an idea on how the rehab is going. Maybe, we'll be able to give an estimate on when he'll be back." Bentley is expected to spend a few days in the hospital. Also, rookie defensive back DeMario Minter had arthroscopic knee surgery to repair some defects in his cartilage. He isn't expected to be back until mid-October.
Wilson update: Rookie wide receiver Travis Wilson's contract holdout continues with a possible end in sight. Crennel said the Browns have had talks with agent Tom Condon, who is representing other third-round picks who have to report to training camps this weekend. "There seems to be some thought that something might happen," said Crennel, who warned that with every day he misses Wilson hurts his chances of playing. "If he stays out for two weeks, that gives [Joshua] Cribbs more of an opportunity, Frisman [Jackson] more of an opportunity. Whenever he [Wilson] gets here, he's just further down the depth chart and he has to learn what the other guys already know."
