SEATTLE -- At least five people were shot, one of them fatally, Friday afternoon at the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle, and one person was arrested, authorities said. Five or six people were wounded, assistant police Chief Jim Pugel said.
One person died, fire department spokeswoman Helen Fitzpatrick said. One wounded woman was shot in the abdomen and another woman was hit in the arm, according to news accounts. Information on the others wounded was not immediately available.
A SWAT team searched the federation building, looking for any other victims, anyone hiding or any other possible shooters, police spokesman Rich Pruitt said. Police cordoned off several city blocks to investigate.
Several witnesses said they saw a man walk up and shoot a woman in the leg on a sidewalk near the building.
Man rescued from garage
MURRIETA, Calif. -- A 70-year-old mentally impaired man, unable to walk without assistance, was rescued from a sweltering garage by police who found him near a puddle of urine, authorities said Friday. His caretaker, his brother and another man were arrested.
The temperature was more than 100 degrees when police discovered Andrew James Young living in the garage July 20 with only a cot, fan and portable toilet, investigators said. Police Sgt. Ron Driscoll described the conditions as inhumane.
Young, who suffers from dementia and epilepsy, was treated for malnutrition and was in custody of adult protective services, Sgt. Sandra O'Donnell said Friday.
Young's brother Russell Eugene Calvin Jr., 53, Russell Eugene Calvin III and in-home caretaker Lillie Mae Stewart, 41, have been charged with felony elder abuse. Police said they could not confirm the Calvins were father and son.
Stewart and Calvin Jr. posted bail. Calvin III remained jailed on a parole violation because weapons were found inside the house, Driscoll said. All three were scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.
Russell Calvin Jr. and Stewart denied mistreating Young, saying he went in and out of the garage throughout the day because he enjoys it. "I love my brother. I looked up to him. I would never hurt him," Russell Calvin Jr. said.
Police said Young couldn't move without assistance and had been living in the garage full time. Officer Roy Vargas said Russell Calvin Jr. denied that an elderly man was living at the residence before Vargas found Young.
North Korea spurns talks
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia -- North Korea on Friday spurned appeals to join talks on its nuclear and missile programs, saying the United States should drop financial sanctions before any negotiations occur. A U.S. envoy said the communist nation was sinking deeper into isolation.
At a conference in Malaysia, North Korea struck a defiant tone as U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and top diplomats from other regional powers discussed Asian security matters without their counterpart from Pyongyang.
"I hope that today's gathering will begin the basis for cooperation of a new, regional dialogue that can help us overcome these tensions, help us increase security throughout the region," Rice said before entering the meeting.
She added that the United States hoped for a resumption of stalled six-party talks on North Korea, which also include South Korea, Japan, China and Russia.
"It's unfortunate that the PRK [People's Republic of Korea] has been unwilling to return to the six-party talks," she said. "The United States remains ready at any time, at any place, without any conditions" to resume the talks.
