YOUNGSTOWN -- Box office flip-flops?
Local movie-goers said that the Summer 2006 must-sees were not at the top of their lists when it came to the summer's hottest flicks. According to a Vindicator survey, taken at Southern Park mall and Tinseltown, movies like "Superman Returns," "Cars" and "X-Men 3" received bad reviews, if any.
Movies that were swept under the rug by film critics topped the local survey charts. Local children, teens and young adults said that they enjoyed movies such as "Stick It," "The Omen" and "Final Destination 3."
Cassandra Clyde, 15, and Amy West, 15, both of Struthers, agreed that "Stick It" was their favorite movie of the summer. They both said that the movie's soundtrack was awesome, and it helped them really get into the movie.
"My favorite movie was 'Stick It,'" West said. "I liked the idea of the movie, and the music was great."
"Definitely 'Stick It,'" Clyde said. "I liked the music in it and I liked the actresses."
Sequel fever
Clyde has yet to take her younger brother, Donald, 10, to the movies this summer, but when she does, he wants to see "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest." "I saw the first one and I really liked it," he said.
Will Bolton, 18, from Poland, said that his favorite movie of the summer, by far, was "Clerks 2."
"It was much better than the original," Bolton said. "It had great comedy and was a little raunchier, too."
Ashleigh Malave, 19, from Youngstown said that "Final Destination 3" was the summer's best flick, but her friend, Tiffany Arnoto, 21, from Struthers, disagreed and said that the best movie of the summer was "The Omen."
"It was a little scary and it kept making me jump out of my seat," Arnoto said.
Mark Conway, 17, from Poland said that he only saw one movie this summer, and said that the movie's previews were better than the movie.
"I saw X-Men 3," Conway said. "It was not good at all."
Shane Sparks, 18, from Enon Valley, Pa., and Jake Cooper, 17, from New Galilee, Pa., ventured across the state border to see a matinee showing of "Little Man," the comedy featuring Shawn and Marlon Wayans. Sparks said that this is his first movie of the summer, and he said that he thinks it looks really funny.
"So far, my favorite was 'Mission Impossible 3,'" Cooper said. "There was a lot of action, and I liked the other ones. Little Man should be good too. It looks hilarious."
