STRUTHERS -- A city bar manager has pleaded innocent to public gaming and was ordered back to court at 10 a.m. Oct. 10. Richard M. Daniel, 41, of Forest Creek Drive, was arraigned Wednesday morning in municipal court, where he waived his right to a speedy trial. Daniel was charged Friday morning after two electronic gambling devices were found inside the Tangier bar, where Daniel is manager. He declined to comment on the case.
Bank robber sought
HANOVERTON -- Authorities are searching for a man who robbed Consumers National Bank branch, 30034 Canal St., of an undisclosed amount of money around 11:45 a.m. Wednesday. The Columbiana County Sheriff's Department said the suspect is a white man more than 6 feet tall with a large build. He wore a black ski mask and asked a teller for all the money in the cash drawer. The man was last seen driving east on U.S. Route 30 in a white, four-door car. Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff's office at (330) 424-7255.
Felony bomb charges
STRUTHERS -- The case of a Poland Township man charged with felony possession of pipe bomb materials has been bound over to a Mahoning County grand jury. Poland Townshippolice arrested Scott Volovar, 29, of Greystone, a part-time Western Reserve Joint Fire District firefighter, at his home July 9. His case was bound over Wednesday in municipal court here.
Steel theft trial delay
YOUNGSTOWN -- A preliminary hearing on felony charges of theft and receiving stolen property for Brian Kaczmark of Girard was reset to Monday in municipal court because he didn't hire a lawyer in time for Wednesday's hearing. He said he needed to have his $100,000 bond reduced so he could get out of jail and work in order to retain a lawyer. Judge Elizabeth A. Kobly said she would not reduce the bond but would appoint a lawyer to represent Kaczmark, 30, of Broadview Avenue. He and James Lee, 35, of Trumbull Avenue, Girard, are accused of stealing 80 steel rollers and selling them for scrap. Lee's case was bound over to a Mahoning County grand jury earlier this month.
Minor injuries in fire
YOUNGSTOWN -- The fire at a two-story apartment building at 1123 E. Indianola Ave. was "so hot and intense" that firefighters could not determine where it started when they arrived around 10:20 p.m. Tuesday, the fire department said. Five firefighters were slightly injured, reports show. No residents were inside at the time. Loss was listed at $30,000. The cause is under investigation. Police were sent to the scene Wednesday to check out reports that someone was taking copper from the building.
Counterfeiting charges
BOARDMAN -- A 44-year-old Youngstown woman is to appear today in Mahoning County Court on charges of forgery and criminal simulation, both felonies. Rosaria Harris of East Boston Avenue is accused of trying to pass five counterfeit money orders.
Police were called to SkyBank on South Avenue Tuesday afternoon when Harris tried to cash the money orders totaling $4,250. Harris told police that she had received the money orders in the mail from selling items online, though she couldn't tell police what items she sold, according to a police report. She was arrested and released on a $6,500 bond.
Man jailed in rape case
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Jay Matteo, 52, of East Elizabeth Street, Neshannock Township, was in Lawrence County Jail on Wednesday night in lieu of $10,000 bond on charges of rape, involuntary sexual intercourse, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and harassment. Police said he had attacked a female friend at his home earlier Wednesday.
Motorcyclist killed
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Paul E. Morrison, 32, of Carrie Way, died Wednesday after his motorcycle was hit by a turning car on Pa. Route 173, about two miles south of Grove City. Police said Morrison was traveling south when a car driven by Stephen Lauer, 20, of Grove City, pulled into his path. Lauer was traveling north and tried to make a left turn. Police said charges are pending against Lauer.
