LIBERTY -- Ryan Satterlee will be joining brothers Erin and Sean in the collegiate ranks this year, but he will be the only one playing baseball.
Ryan, a recent graduate of Ursuline High where he was a standout shortstop on the baseball team, has a baseball scholarship to the University of Toledo.
He was the last of seven recruits to sign a letter of intent, announced Toledo baseball coach Cory Mee, who is happy to have Ryan aboard.
"He is outstanding defensively and he'll be able to compete right away at the shortstop position," Mee said.
"What really impresses [me] about him is his knowledge and feel for the game. He is the son of a coach [Jim Satterlee] and he plays that way, a real quarterback on the field so-to-speak," Mee said.
Jim Satterlee is an assistant baseball coach for Boardman High and the Line Drive Academy traveling team under manager Scott Knox.
Brothers eye new challenges
Meanwhile, brothers Erin and Sean will be changing colleges as they pursue new academic challenges that do not include baseball.
Erin, an outstanding second baseman for the Union College (Ky.) baseball team with a baseball scholarship before graduating this year, will attend the University of Chicago Law School.
And Sean, who recently completed his freshman year at Youngstown State and made the Dean's List, is transferring to the University of Hawaii to study oceanography. Sean is bypassing baseball.
Erin and Sean also played baseball for Ursuline in the middle infield. Erin was a shortstop and Sean a second baseman. They were teammates two years while Sean and Ryan were teammates for one year.
All three also were teammates for the Line Drive Academy traveling team and coached by their father.
"This will be the first time that there will not be a Satterlee in the Ursuline infield [in] 10 years," said Jim Satterlee regarding Ryan's departure from the Irish and their Satterlee-absent roster for next season.
State-bound season
Ryan enjoyed an outstanding senior season with Ursuline this year under coach Sean Durkin, batting .477 with 10 doubles, four triples and two homers and 31 RBIs. He helped the Irish advance to the Division III state championship game.
Ryan also is having a successful season with Line Drive Academy, with a .422 batting average with 11 doubles, five triples and 26 RBIs.
Erin had a successful senior season with Union College, batting .382 with nine home runs, 18 doubles, four triples, 67 RBIs and 67 runs scored. He also was 24-for-26 in stolen base attempts.
Erin made the NAIA All-American and All-Region teams and the All-AAC first team.
He also was an academic standout by making CoSIDA and Scholar-Athlete Academic All-American teams.
Ellis also at Toledo
Ryan Satterlee will be joining another Youngstown-area player, Mike Ellis, on the Toledo team.
Ellis, a junior pitcher from Warren JFK and Southington, posted a 2-2 record and 3.82 ERA in 12 games over 37 2/3 innings this season.
In 2005 as a freshman, Ellis had an 0-2 record with a 12.75 ERA in 12 games over 24 innings.
While at Warren JFK, Ellis compiled a three-year record of 18-4, including 6-0 as a sophomore and 9-0 as a junior with ERAs of 0.57 and 2.30, respectively. He went 3-4 his senior year with 60 strikeouts in 40 innings.
He was a three-time Vindicator All-Area selection and team MVP.
The son of Brian and Tracy Ellis, Mike is majoring in business.
