YOUNGSTOWN -- Carlton K. Council Jr., 22, of West Princeton Avenue, was in guarded condition late Monday night at St. Elizabeth Health Center with three gunshot wounds to his torso. Police found Council lying in the front yard of his home around 11 p.m. Sunday. He told police that he'd walked to a store and was shot on the way back but didn't know who shot him.
Inmate dies after beingfound unconscious
MERCER, Pa. -- An inmate at the State Regional Corrections Facility at Mercer has died, Superintendent Paul Stowitzky announced. On Sunday, corrections officers found inmate Jim Hanson, 34, unconscious in his cell during the morning count at 6 a.m. After receiving immediate emergency first aid, Hanson was transferred to UPMC Hospital in Sharon, where he was pronounced dead at 7:32 a.m.
Pennsylvania State Police from the Mercer barracks will conduct an investigation. The official cause of death will be determined by the Erie County Coroner's office.
Hanson was serving six years, eight months to 20 years for theft by deception on an Erie County conviction, effective in September 1999. He had been at SRCF Mercer since Nov. 24, 1999.
Old building, new use
YOUNGSTOWN -- The old fire station at 1639 Mahoning Ave., which has served as Youngstown Police Department training building, will now be called the YPD community education center. A short program and luncheon are planned for 1 p.m. Wednesday at the building. Detective Sgt. Delphine Baldwin Casey of the planning and training division said the building will be used for events that support police community relations such as block watch meetings, police training for residents, youth events, neighborhood gatherings and so forth. Sewer line construction
WARREN -- Panther Avenue Northeast, between Elm Road and Woodland Avenue, will be closed to traffic from 6 a.m. Wednesday to 8 p.m. Friday. The avenue is closing because of construction of a sanitary sewer line for the city school district's new high school.
McDonald's shooting
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police issued a warrant Monday for 19-year-old Lamar Herring of East Avondale Avenue, who police believe opened fire on a car parked at the McDonald's, 2525 Market St., over the weekend. Mark Lett, 19, of Ridge Avenue was slightly injured in the shooting that happened around 1:45 p.m. Saturday. Police said Herring stood by the fence and fired at Lett, who was sitting in a car in the lot. The warrant charges Herring with felonious assault and having a weapon under disability, which means a prior conviction prohibits him from possessing a firearm.
Arrest after car crash
YOUNGSTOWN -- Kevin Bacher Jr. intentionally drove his car toward two pedestrians and a man in an SUV on Maryland Avenue then struck a utility pole and became trapped inside his Pontiac, police said. Bacher, 18, of Richland Avenue, was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center with a broken right leg and left wrist after the crash Sunday night, police said. No one else was injured. At the hospital, a police hold was placed on Bacher, who was arrested on three counts of felonious assault. He was expected to be turned over to police once released from the hospital. No motive was given for his alleged actions.
