Man in jail after threats, damage to city property
The suspect tried to kick out a cruiser window.
CAMPBELL -- A 20-year-old Devitt Avenue man is in Mahoning County jail after threatening to shoot a policeman and damaging a city police car and a camera in the city jail Monday morning.
The case began at 9:55 a.m. when police responded to a call about a man assaulting a woman in front of a Tenney Avenue home across the street from city hall and the police department.
Detective Sgt. Gus Nicolaou and Patrolman John Rusnak found Benjamin B. Chaibi in the driver's seat of a car. No woman was present when police arrived.
Reported details
Chaibi was arrested and placed in the rear seat of a cruiser after it was determined he did not have a valid driver's license and suspected marijuana was found in the right pocket of his trousers.
Once in the cruiser, the suspect began banging his head against the driver's-side window. When ordered to stop, he damaged the window by kicking it. Police said the suspect again refused to stop, and pepper spray was used to control him.
Chaibi was taken to the city jail, where he threatened to shoot a police officer and himself. While taking a shower, the suspect plugged the drain, causing some flooding. He was then placed in a holding cell where he broke the surveillance camera, police said.
After that, Chaibi was taken to the county jail to await arraignment on charges of vandalizing public property, possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia, resisting arrest and aggravated menacing.
