Boardman rallies for 8-7 victory in opener

HAGERSTOWN, Md. -- The Boardman Pony 13-year-old All-Star baseball team rallied to force extra innings then defeated Hagerstown, 8-7, in the eighth inning of a zone tournament game.
Trailing 7-5 in the seventh inning, Boardman's David DiBernardi walked and went to second base on a passed ball. Joey Markovitch singled to advance DiBernardi.
Alec Neapolitan singled deep into the right-field corner to send home both runners for a tie score. The rally ended with the bases loaded.
Boardman held Hagerstown scoreless in the top half of the eighth, although Hagerstown left the bases loaded for the fourth time in the game.
In Boardman's at-bat, Tyler Walls walked and DiBernardi singled into right field that brought Walls home with the winning run.
Boardman pitching allowed seven hits and left 13 runners stranded. Walls was the winning pitcher while Brad Banzhoff took the loss.
DiBernardi had three hits and Neapolitan had two with three RBIs. Hagerstown was led by Christian Binford with a three-run homer.
Boardman's next opponent is New Bedford (Mass.) which defeated West Bank (Va.), 6-5.
Line Drive wins NABF
STRUTHERS -- Line Drive Academy used two big innings to win the NABF Senior Regional title, 11-1, over Rondinelli Tuxedo.
Line Drive, 5-0 in the tournament, will play in next week's NABF Senior World Series in Jackson, Miss.
Line Drive scored four times on just one hit in the first inning, taking advantage of four walks, a hit batter and a wild pitch.
Line Drive then used three Rondinelli errors to score five runs, four of them unearned in the sixth inning, and added two more runs in the seventh.
Ryan Satterlee had three hits and scored three runs for Line Drive while Anthony Porter drove home four runs and had a pair of hits. Satterlee was named tournament MVP (.471 batting average, five runs, three RBIs, one error).
Armani Johnson added two safeties while Kevin Sikora went the first five innings for the win, allowing five hits with four strikeouts.
Andy Dobson had two hits in the game for Rondinelli which received a strong relief effort from Jarryd Summers who tossed five scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Summers was named the tournament top pitcher (12 innings without allowing an earned run and 19 strikeouts).
Line Drive Academy 6,Ohio Yankees 2
Line Drive moved into the championship game with the 6-2 win over the Ohio Yankees. Porter and Satterlee had two hits each.
Porter drove in two runs while Corey Martin pitched the first six innings with seven strikeouts to get the win.
Rondinelli Tuxedo 9,Livi Steel 6
Rondinelli had 15 hits, all singles, and took advantage of three errors by Livi Steel for five unearned runs.
Matt Katich had four hits while Chris Beaty and Dobson had three each. Jeff Olenych allowed just one run in his 31/3 innings of relief work to get the win.
Tom Popadak, Mike Hoelzel, Tony Pozega, Josh Swipas, Manoli Pahoulis, Eric Pirtz, Brett Grabman and Marc Rossi all had two hits for Livi Steel.
AA playoffs
YOUNGSTOWN -- John Hay tossed a two-hitter as Bud's/DiCioccio defeated Metros, 2-1, in Game One of their best-of-three playoff series at Pemberton Park.
Hay struck out eight batters and walked two.
Brent Parks and Josh Conkey singled and scored the runs for Bud's. Shane Davis and Rick Gozur had RBI singles. Conkey also doubled.
Tom Clayton and Matt Guerirri had Metros' hits. Guerirri scored the only run. Chuck Shiffhauer allowed seven hits, walked three and struck out three.
Little League
BOARDMAN -- In a winners bracket game, Hamilton defeated Canfield, 6-1, in the 11-12 state tournament at Fields of Dreams.
Hamilton's Jacob Dully limited Canfield to four hits and one run in five innings of work. Kyle Cotcamp finished on the mound.
Offensive stars for Hamilton was Jacob Dully and Logan Stanger who each hit two-run homers.
For Canfield, the offensive stars were brothers Michael and Anthony Ross.
Canfield plays today at 2:30 p.m.
In other games, Avon defeated Jefferson, 15-4, and Lucasville Valley ousted Bellevue, 11-8, from the double-elimination tournament.
