Region well-represented at Soap Box Derby



AKRON -- Two teens in The Vindicator's coverage region took two of the top three places in the rally masters' division at the 69th annual All-American Soap Box Derby Championship held Saturday at Derby Downs here.
Scott Reed, 16, of Fredericksburg, Va., snatched the rally title by besting Kyle Bair, 15, of New Castle, Pa., who finished second. Alexandria Terrigno, 14, of Campbell, finished third.
Rally champions received $3,000 college scholarships, followed by $2,000 for second and $1,500 for third, courtesy of the AASBD.
The Levi Strauss Signature brand was the event's title sponsor. The AASBD is an official youth initiative of the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing, NASCAR.
The 2006 finals showcased more than 500 competitors ages 8-17 from 40 states, the District of Columbia and five foreign countries -- Japan, Germany, New Zealand, Guam and the Philippines.
All-American Soap Box Derby, founded in 1933, is one of the most established grass-roots youth and family organizations in the United States. It is based in Akron.
