HONORS
Combat Action Badge
NEWTON FALLS -- Seventy-five soldiers from the Newton Falls-based C Co., 216th Engineer Battalion, Ohio Army National Guard, were awarded the Army Combat Action Badge during a ceremony Friday at the unit's new armory located at the Ravenna Arsenal, 1440 state Route 534. The unit was formerly located in Austintown.
The Combat Action Badge, established in May 2005, provides special recognition to soldiers who engage the enemy or are engaged by the enemy during combat operations, according to the Ohio Adjutant General's Department.
The 216th was deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from February 2004 to February 2005. Soldiers engaged in the war on terrorism since Sept. 18, 2001, are retroactively eligible to receive the award, officials said.
MISCELLANEOUS
Lifesaver
Army Sgt. David A. Smith recently put his military training into use to help save the life of a German citizen.
Smith, a military policeman with 11 years of military service, is the son of Ruth A. Smith of Homeworth.
While on patrol at a traffic control point during a recent military training exercise in Otterstad, Germany, Smith and two other soldiers, were approached by an elderly man who said he needed help.
The man led them to a fishing dock where another man was suffering from a possible stroke.
"He was conscious but was having trouble breathing and was complaining of paralysis on his right side," said Smith, a 1994 graduate of West Branch High School.
Smith and his fellow soldiers assisted the man at the scene until local paramedics arrived and took the man to a hospital.
Free legal services
VIENNA -- The Trumbull County Bar Association has teamed up with the Family Support Office at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station to develop a program to provide free legal services for local members of the military.
The program will use local volunteer attorneys to assist military personnel with two areas of federal law: the Service Members Civil Relief Act and the Uniformed Services Employment and Re-employment Rights Act.
The Service Members Civil Relief Act governs civil law matters affecting service members, and the Uniformed Services Employment and Re-employment Rights Act prohibits discrimination against people because of their service in the Armed Forces Reserve, the National Guard or other uniformed services.
A free seminar will be at 8:30 a.m. Friday at the Sunrise Inn, 510 E. Market St., Warren, to educate Trumbull County bar members in this area of law. For more information and reservations, call the bar association at (330) 675-2415.
