Scrappers lose 8-2 against Vermont



Mahoning Valley had just six hits and saw its three-game win streak snapped.
NILES -- One night after the Mahoning Valley Scrappers pounded out 18 hits and scored a season-high in runs, they were shut down by the Vermont Lake Monsters, 8-2, in a New York-Penn League game at Eastwood Field Saturday night.
The Scrappers (18-14), who saw their three-game winning streak come to an end, defeated Vermont, 12-4, in the series opener Friday night.
But Saturday, Lake Monsters starter Aaron Jackson and two relievers combined to hold Mahoning Valley to just six hits and single runs in the fourth and sixth innings.
Six-run fourth
Vermont, meanwhile, broke the game open with a six-run rally in the fourth inning, giving the Lake Monsters an 8-0 lead at the time.
Ryan Delaughter hit a three-run homer in Vermont's fourth inning, and Francisco Guzman had a two-run shot in the third inning, part of his three-hit night.
For Mahoning Valley, Stephen Douglas drove in both runs with singles. Andrew Lytle, the New York-Penn League's leading hitter, went 1-for-3 and scored both runs for the Scrappers.
Mahoning Valley starter Luis Valdez (5-1) suffered his first loss of the season, allowing five runs (three earned) in 31/3 innings.
The Scrappers, who had a three-game winning streak snapped, play host to Vermont today at 1:05 p.m. in the finale of the three-game series.
