Republicans pick candidate for 59th Ohio House District

BOARDMAN -- Kasey C. Schidel of Canfield has been selected by the Republican precinct committee members in the 59th Ohio House District as the party's nominee in the Nov. 7 general election.
Schidel, an attorney and captain in the Marine Corps, will oppose state Rep. Kenneth A. Carano, an Austintown Democrat seeking his fourth two-year term. Schidel replaces Mark Hanni of Boardman, who ran unopposed for the seat in the May Republican primary but withdrew last month because his law practice didn't permit him time to run a proper campaign.
Mark Munroe, Mahoning County Republican Party vice chairman, said the Saturday election was close as two other candidates, Patricia Cizmar of Canfield and Todd Schuller of Boardman, also sought the nomination.
Earlier in the week, Greg Beule of Boardman withdrew is name from consideration.
Schidel said none of the candidates received more than 50 percent of the votes on the first ballot, forcing a runoff between Schidel and Schuller. Munroe characterized the runoff as "close."
Munroe said he was pleased with the quality of candidates presenting themselves as Republicans in a predominantly Democratic area.
The 59th District consists of Berlin, Boardman, Canfield City and Township, Craig Beach, Ellsworth, Milton, Poland Village and Township, and most of Austintown.
