R & amp;J Trucking winsBabe Ruth tourney
CINCINNATI -- R & amp;J Trucking advanced to the 18 & amp; under Babe Ruth World Series.
R & amp;J defeated Cincinnati Storm twice in the championship round of the Ohio Valley Regional, posting 6-3 and 8-4 victories.
They advance to Newark for the Babe Ruth World Series Aug. 11-18.
In the opener, Ben Miller hit a three-run, walk-off homer. David Patrick had three hits and a two-run single to tie the game. Andy Geibel pitched all 10 innings to get the win.
In the second game Ed Rohan went 4-for-4 with four RBIs and a two-run homer, while Miller also had a two-run blast. Lou Coppola pitched the win with Geibel earned the save.
Little League update
BOARDMAN -- The Little League Baseball state 11-12 year old tournament at the Fields of Dreams was postponed Saturday.
Games scheduled today are Jefferson vs. Patterson Park at noon, Lucasville Valley vs. Canfield at 2:30 p.m., Bellevue vs. Twin City at 5 and Defiance vs. Cambridge at 7:30.
The District 2 Little League Baseball 9-10 year old games postponed Saturday will also be held at the Fields of Dreams: Struthers vs. Boardman West at noon and Boardman East vs. Howland at 2 p.m.
A District 2 Little League11-year-old game, Canfield White vs. Boardman East, will be played at the Fields of Dreams at 6 p.m.
Youngstown Striders
MERRILLVILLE, Ind. -- The Youngstown Striders had 22 athletes qualify for the AAU Junior Olympics at the AAU Region VI track meet recently.
James Allen won two events in the boys 15-16-year-old division, the 100-meter dash (11.1 seconds) and 200 (22.7).
In 17-18 boys, Rashawn Cook was second in the 2000 steeplechase (6:27).
In 13-14 girls, Jasmine Brown was third in the 100 (12.7) and 200 (26.3), and Sarroya Townsend was third in the discus (110-0) and shot put (38-9).
Brown also teamed with Jasmine Powell, Janae Roland, and Alicia Williams for a third in the 4x100 relay (50.8).
In 15-16 boys, Caleb Mathews was fourth in the 110 hurdles (16.5) and in 14 boys, Alexander Pettway was fourth in the 200 (24.5).
Among 13-year-olds, Bobby Patterson-Felder was third in the javelin (75 feet, 6 inches) and 200 hurdles (32.4), Trevor Smith was third in the 200 (26.1), Tiaunna Brown was fourth in the javelin (60-7) and Jacaia Stoffer was third in the 3000 racewalk (22:09).
For 11-year-olds, Jordan Wilkins was second in the pentathlon and Toi Brown was second in the shot put (22-9).
In 10 boys, Julian Lanier was third in the high jump (3-10), while Naomi Patmon was second in the shot put (17-9) for girls age 10.
Among 9-year-old boys, Jordan Lanier was fourth in the high jump (3-6); Jayshawn Coleman was fourth in the 100 (14.5), 3rd in the 200 (29.20) and second in the 400 (1:07), and Damon Green was fourth in the shot put (22-6).
In 7-8 boys, David Collins was fourth in the 800 (2:55), while Joy Woodberry-Felder was second in the 100 (15.8) and second in the 200 (34.0) among girls age 7-8.
The athletes will compete at the AAU Junior Olympic games at Norfolk (Va.) State July 29-Aug. 5.
Hiram baseballlands two locals
HIRAM -- Anthony Maruca and Justin Street, recent graduates of Champion and Howland Highs, respectively, will attend Hiram College and resume their baseball careers.
Maruca, an outfielder who played two years of baseball at Champion and made the All-Trumbull Athletic Conference first team as a senior, plans to major in sports management and is eyeing a career in coaching or sports media.
In Maruca's junior year, he helped Champion to win district and regional tournament championships and gain a berth in the state meet. He was named the team's Rookie-of-the-Year and made All-TAC honorable mention.
Maruca is the son of Mike and Deanna Maruca of Warren.
Street, who was a catcher for the Howland baseball team and won two letters, will major in education and is planning a career as a physical therapist.
He is the son of Lisa Street of Warren.
Hiram is coached by Howard Jenter of Champion.
Ursuline reunion
YOUNGSTOWN -- The 1956 Ursuline High School football team is planning a 50th reunion for Sept. 15-16.
Members of the last undefeated Irish team that went 10-0 and won the City Series championship will gather for a dinner on Friday and attend the Steubenville game on Saturday.

YOUNGSTOWN -- The Penn Ohio Raiders, who hold first place in the United States Football Alliance Central Division with a 6-1 record, will play the Akron Ohio Hurricanes today at the Chaney High field at 1 p.m.
The Raiders also are slated to play at Chaney Aug. 6 at 1 p.m. against the Rochester (Pa.) Renegades.

*HARTFORD -- Due to heavy rains overnight, track officials canceled racing at Sharon Speedway Saturday.
*MERCER, Pa. -- Rain forced Mercer Raceway Park to cancel racing action scheduled for Saturday.

COLUMBUS -- Peter Vagenas' goal in the 14th minute gave the Los Angeles Galaxy a 1-1 tie with the Columbus Crew on Saturday.
Serena loses
MASON -- Vera Zvonareva ended Serena Williams' run in her first tournament in six months, beating the seven-time Grand Slam champion 6-2, 6-3 on Saturday to advance to the final of the Western & amp; Southern Financial Group Women's Open.
Zvonera will face fourth-seeded Katarina Srebotnik, who upset defending champion Patty Schnyder 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (6).

VERONA, N.Y. -- Gabriel Hjertstedt, bidding to become the third two-time winner of the B.C. Open, overcame two rain delays to shoot a 4-under 68 and take a one-shot lead after three rounds.
