NOTEBOOK | Scrappers vs. Renegades



Roster moves: The Scrappers transferred J.D. Martin to Class A Lake County on Monday. Martin, who was on rehab after off-season Tommy John surgery, made six starts and was 0-1 with a 1.80 ERA. The team also had two additions to the roster as right-handed pitcher Jorge Riere has been transferred to the team from Lake County where he was 1-1 with a 2.50 ERA, and right-handed pitcher Eric Stiller was promoted from Rookie League Burlington were he was 2-2 with a 6.45 ERA with 15 strikeouts in 22 innings. To make room the Scrappers transferred right-handed pitcher Dan Frega to Burlington. Frega was 2-4 with an 8.80 ERA.
Pitcher of week: Luis Valdez had a red-hot week for the Scrappers as in his first two starts this year he pitched 10 scoreless innings. He has allowed just one hit in the two games, tossing a no-hitter in the first five innings against Aberdeen. He was named the New York-Penn League's pitcher of the week ending July 16. His season record in 5-0 with a 1.38 ERA in 26 innings this year. His first 16 innings all came in relief.
Game notes: Mahoning Valley is 15-0 this season when leading after seven innings. On the other hand they are 0-9 when trailing after six innings. The Scrappers are 12-2 when they score at lead four runs. Hudson Valley, which is making its only appearance at Eastwood this week and the only time the two teams meet this season, is 2-13 when trailing after five innings and 6-12 when they don't score first.
Tonight's starter: Right-hander Josh Tomlin, who picked up his first victory of the season on July 14 at Lowell, will make his sixth start tonight against the Renegades. He's 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA with 19 strikeouts in 20 innings of work. He was a 19th round draft pick by the Indians in the 2006 draft out of Texas Tech.
Scrappers on TV: WYFX Channel 17/62 will televise the Scrappers on Aug. 20 home game from Eastwood Field against the Batavia Muckdogs at 4:05 p.m.
