Scrappers lose, but stay in 1st

Mahoning Valley was hurt by three inning-ending double plays.
ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The Mahoning Valley Scrappers couldn't find a way to score Monday night and suffered a 6-1 setback to the Oneonta Tigers.
The Scrappers, who dropped two out of three to the Tigers, had nine hits in the contest, but three of their rallies were wiped out by inning-ending double plays by Oneonta.
The Scrappers (15-12) managed to stay in first place in the Pinckney Division of the New York-Penn League as second place Batavia lost 5-4 to Tri-City.
J.D. Martin made his sixth start for the Scrappers and pitched three innings, allowing two runs and five hits, while reliever Dan Frega was battered for four runs in the fourth and Dan Miltenberger allowed the final run in the eighth.
Early lead
The Tigers wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. Brennan Boesch, a third round pick for Detroit, hit his third homer of the season off Martin in the first inning to give Oneonta a 1-0 lead. The Tigers added a run in the second to take a 2-0 lead.
Martin allowed two runs in three innings, ending his scoreless innings streak at 142/3 innings.
Mahoning Valley got a run back in the fourth on an RBI single by Kelly Edmundson, but the Tigers broke it open with a four-run fourth off Frega. Oneonta got their four runs on five hits and an error. Only three of the hits reached the outfield.
Strong pitching
Brenden Wise allowed one run over four innings as Oneonta's starter. Lauren Gagnier, Casey Fein, and Brett Jensen shut the Scrappers down over the final five innings.
Martin (0-1) took the loss for the Scrappers. He was making the start on rehab out of AA Akron.
Stephen Douglass and Josh Roberts were the offensive standouts for the Scrappers, each going 2-for-4.
Mahoning Valley starter Luis Valdez was named the New York-Penn League pitcher of the week, going 2-0 over 10 shutout innings and allowing just one hit.
The Scrappers open a six-game homestand at 7:05 tonight against Hudson Valley.
