Pirates' Caseyon the block
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Pirates are not discussing a contract extension with first baseman Sean Casey, a sign they may be looking to trade their highest-paid player before the end of the month.
The Pirates dropped hints earlier this season they might like to sign Casey to a multiple-year contract that would allow him to keep playing in his hometown beyond this season. Casey was acquired from the Reds with one year left on a contract that pays him $8.5 million this season -- all but $1 million paid by the Pirates.
That's a lot of money for a team that traditionally has had one of the majors' lowest payrolls -- and for a player who doesn't hit for much power, with three homers this season and 12 the last two seasons.
"No discussion has taken place in regards to a contract extension with Sean or his agent, but it is something we are talking about -- what to do at first base," Pirates general manager Dave Littlefield said Sunday. "You've got to make a decision on what you see at first with Sean and dollars and years and production."
One problem is the Pirates, on pace for a 14th consecutive losing season, have no first baseman in waiting to replace Casey. Catcher Ryan Doumit played there a few times this season before going on the disabled list with a hamstring problem.
Craig Wilson has played frequently at first the last few seasons but, unsigned beyond this season, he is almost certain to be traded by the end of the year. July 31 is the deadline for trading a player without obtaining waivers.
