Wharmby the lone area winner
Three other area teams lost first round games on Saturday.
STRUTHERS -- Wharmby Sports managed just two hits, but took advantage of three errors and eight walks by Cage Club Yard Dogs pitchers to win 4-2, becoming the first Youngstown-area team to win a game in Saturday's first round of the Connie Mack baseball tournament at Cene Park.
John Thomas went the first five innings for the win with five strikeouts while Tom Popadak struck out all six men he faced to earn the save. Jim Maslar had a single and a double for the Yard Dogs.
Fairborn Post 526 4, Rondinelli Tuxedo 2
Joey Watson tossed a complete game four-hitter for Fairborn Post.
Watson had only one strikeout but had 14 ground-ball outs in the game. Jon Webb and Jordan Clift had two hits each for the winners, while Matt Katich had a triple and a single for Rondinelli. Corey Collins had five strikeouts in his six innings of work on the mound.
Ohio Thunder 2,Mink Financial 1
Tim Hromada drove home the go-ahead run in the top of the fifth with a two-out single. Luke Yetzer tossed the first six innings of five-hit ball with three strikeouts for the win with Anthony Munoz picking up the save. Munoz added two hits.
Richie Tissone had a pair of singles for Mink while Corey Vukovic went the first five innings with five strikeouts, allowing only one earned run in defeat.
Thunder Select 3, Livi Steel 2
Eric Makzec hit a two-run double with two out in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Thunder Select.
Manoli Pahoulis, Chester Kirkwood, and Josh Swipas had two hits each for Livi Steel while Shane Liska suffered the loss. Liska had seven strikeouts.
