Two held in Market Street robbery
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police have arrested two men in an aggravated robbery on Market Street near Florida Avenue.
The victim, a 22-year-old Whitney Avenue man, told police he was walking in the 2800 block of Market Street around 12:35 a.m. Thursday when he was confronted by two men, one brandishing a handgun.
The gunman searched him and took his wallet containing various identification and other cards but no cash, the victim said.
The robbers then ran to a waiting car and fled on East Florida Avenue, the victim said.
Police stopped the car on South Avenue at 1 a.m. Thursday, noting that both the vehicle and two of the three men in the car matched descriptions given by the robbery victim.
The victim was brought to the scene and identified the pair, Jerry Torres, 18, of Newark, N.J., and Juan Robles, 27, of East Dewey Avenue, as the men who had robbed him at gunpoint.
Police said they found a loaded semi-automatic handgun two blocks from where they stopped the car carrying Robles and Torres. The car had made a brief stop at that point as police approached, officers said.
A white bandanna with black markings and a black and white baseball cap found in the car were also identified by the victim as having been worn by the robbers, police said.
Torres and Robles remained held in Mahoning County Jail Thursday night. Police said the third man in the car was released without charges.
