YOUNGSTOWN -- Police arrested two men early Thursday on charges of robbing a city man on Market Street.
Juan Robles, 27, of East Dewey Avenue, and Jerry Torres, 18, of Clifton Avenue, Newark, N.J., were arraigned Thursday in municipal court on charges of aggravated robbery.
Police reported the 22-year-old male victim, who listed a West Side address, was walking on the side of the Gary Crim Building, 2901 Market St., at 12:35 a.m. when he was approached by a man wearing black and white baseball cap. His face was covered with a black and white bandanna.
The man pointed a gun at the victim, and after they moved down a driveway away from Market the man searched the victim and took his wallet. A second man acted as a lookout a few feet away, a police report says.
The two men fled with the wallet, and the victim ran to Shenanigan's bar on Market to call authorities. While the victim was running, he looked back and saw a dark-colored car with shiny rims speeding away on East Florida Avenue.
Minutes later, a patrol officer observed a dark green Chevrolet Lumina with shiny rims driving southbound on South Avenue. The officer followed the vehicle to Animal Charity, 3722 South Ave. The vehicle then proceeded to the stoplight at Sunset and Jordan, where the officer saw that the two men inside the auto matched the description of the suspects.
The stop
The officer stopped the vehicle in a South Avenue parking lot and upon a search, a black and white bandanna and a black and white baseball cap were found, the report says. Officers also found a loaded semiautomatic handgun at the corner of the Animal Charity building.
Officers took the men, who police said were Torres and Robles, into custody.
Judge Robert P. Milich set Robles' bond at $150,000 cash, with the condition of house arrest if bond is posted.
The judge set the bond for Torres at $1 million because Youngstown authorities didn't want him leaving the area if he posted bond. He is in Mahoning County jail.
