ON THE SIDE. . .
This and that from the world of Valley politics.
STRANGE AND CREEPY: It's always a bit strange and kind of creepy to have a conversation with someone who refers to himself in the third person. As a test, I referred to myself as "David" in brief conversations in the office recently and the unanimous opinion after five minutes was it's strange and creepy.
I've interviewed U.S. Sen. Mike DeWine a number of times, and he never referred to himself in the third person -- until a stop last week at the Cortland Fire Department. During an interview with me and two other reporters, DeWine touted his record and repeatedly referred to himself as "Mike DeWine."
I didn't say anything at the time, but from the safety of my desk, David can bravely tell the senator, assuming someone shows him a copy of this, to please stop the third-person talk.
What forum? Jennifer Brunner, the Democratic nominee for Ohio secretary of state, held a voter forum recently at Youngstown's McGuffey Centre, which I politely described in an article as "lightly attended." Not counting elected officials and her campaign staff, there were maybe eight people there. Early on, Patrick Gallaway, Brunner's campaign spokesman, had to ask a question to keep the discussion going.
