TODAY
The 1956 Sesquicentennial Time Capsule display at the Salem Historical Museum exhibit will be open extra hours from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 to 7 p.m. today.
Artist Don Getz of Peninsula, Ohio, will begin installing mural about Salem at 10 a.m. today at the corner of South Broadway Avenue and Pershing Street.
SATURDAY
The Salem Grande Parade starts at 5:30 p.m. Saturday from F.E. Cope Drive at North Lincoln Avenue. The two-mile parade route is: south on Lincoln, west on Second Street, south on Ellsworth, east on State Street and north on Union Avenue to East Ninth and the high school.
The Bicentennial Queen's float will include Queen Nicole Adamson and Court members Danielle Baker, Sarah Bender, Kayla Niederhiser, Megan Phillis and Lori Singer. Escorting the queen's float will be the Sesquicentennial Queen Joan Robusch Kirk, attended by 1956 Court members Jeanine Smith, Margaret Hannay Garloch and Sandra Bailey Borrows riding in period vehicles.
The Empire Statesmen Drum and Bugle Corps of Rochester, N.Y. is returning to Salem to lead the parade. The Empire Statesmen will perform at 8 p.m. in Reilly Stadium.
A 45-by-90-foot flag will be carried in the parade by 120 people.
The Heinz Hitch from Pittsburgh, Pa., will take part. It dates from 1869 when food was delivered by wagons. The actual wagon was manufactured about 150 years ago by the Studebaker Corp.
Bands include the Salem High School Band, the East Liverpool Alumni Band and the Kiltie Band from Carnegie Mellon University.
The Ohio Wheelmen will ride vintage bicycles from 1918 or earlier.
SUNDAY
Bicentennial closing ceremonies are at 6 p.m. Sunday at Waterworth Memorial Park. The Empire Statesmen Drum and Bugle Corps will play for about 45 minutes and then be followed by closing remarks, special presentations and performances, and the release of 200 helium-filled balloons. Salem Junior High School music instructor Attila Samu will sing a special song in honor of Salem's Bicentennial.
