Editorial about misdeeds of lawyer didn't go far enough
EDITOR:
I would like to respond to your June 27 editorial.
As the mother of one of Edward Sturgeon's victims, I have read every word that you have written, and I would like to set the record straight.
I totally agree with your praise of the various members of the Bar Association. I commend Attys. Ronald Slipsky and Chip Comstock of the Mahoning County Bar Association Grievance Committee and Lori Brown of the State of Ohio Disciplinary Counsel. Through all this Ron, Chip and Lori treated all of Sturgeon's victims with all the respect and dignity due them. Also, my thanks go to Jose Morales for his treatment of my daughter when she made her police report. He gave her courage. Last but certainly not least I commend all three women for their courage for standing up to Sturgeon.
Regarding the basic message of your editorial, the statement that Paul Gains can make amends for his total lack of action in the whole case is ludicrous.
My daughter filed her police report of her "encounter" with Sturgeon on March 12, 2003. I always thought that Prosecutor Gains did not know about the report until a year later when it became public in your paper. I was wrong. From what I understand, the day the report was filed, then-Police Chief Robert Bush called Gains and warned him. Did the prosecutor look into the report? No. Did he question Sturgeon about it? No. As far as I know, both Chief Bush and Gains ignored it.
As reported in the paper on March 9, 2005, Paul Gains said that Sturgeon would remain at the Canfield Court because these allegations involve Sturgeon's private practice not in his capacity as an assistant county prosecutor.
If this had happened in the private sector and an employee was accused of sexual harassment of several women and the employer did not investigate, would he still have a job?
As we all know, Youngstown has its own "good old boys club." Bush and Sturgeon both have had a long standing personal and professional relationship with Paul Gains. Why didn't Chief Bush, who is an attorney, call the bar association himself which was required by law? Does it surprise anyone that the new job he now holds is as an assistant county prosecutor?
There is more to the story behind the allegations against Dionne Almasy, then city prosecutor, and John McNally, then law director. They were both told my daughter was going to the bar association herself. I believe both believed that this was the best course of action.
My disgust is for Paul Gains. In his capacity as lead law enforcement officer in Mahoning County he was derelict in his duties. He could have done an internal investigation and asked questions, but he did not.

Muslims must want peace
EDITOR:
Worldwide terrorism will stop when the Muslims of the world want it to stop.
Al-Qaida, the enforcement arm of the Islam Wahhabis sect, espouses and uses the ghastly concept of bigotry and fanaticism. The Wahhabis are not a new sect; they have been active for more than two centuries with a demonstrated history of cruel butchery and wide spread massacre.
A leading Muslim cleric has been quoted as saying, & quot; All of the terrorists in the world are Muslim! & quot; If this is true, then the peace-loving Muslims are losing control of Islam. To maintain their religion and beliefs, Muslims must make a firm and clear denunciation of terrorist sects and take action to expel them from the Faith of Islam. Without such active and visible action Muslim terrorism will not end.
If the peace-loving Muslims want the terrorism to stop, they must say stop and it will stop.
