Aid to flood victims
AUSTINTOWN -- Austintown Rotary Club is continuing to help flood victims in the North Wickliffe area. The club is helping seven households, mostly elderly people who have no other assistance, said Lisa Oles, a club member and township trustee. Water-damaged homes after a heavy rain June 22 caused a retention pond in Resurrection Cemetery across North Raccoon Road to overflow. Volunteers are meeting at 8:45 a.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday at the Santisi IGA on Mahoning Avenue. Volunteers will be taping and finishing drywall. New Leetonia leader
LEETONIA -- Robert Rostan is the new superintendent of the Leetonia school district. Rostan resigned on Wednesday as the principal of Poland Seminary High School. The Leetonia Board of Education also approved a three-year contract with Rostan starting Aug. 1. His starting salary will be $83,000 a year.
Traffic-death sentence
LISBON -- Judge David Tobin of Columbiana County Common Pleas Court sentenced a Salem woman Thursday for her involvement in a traffic death. Audrey L. Wylie, 22, of Pembrook Drive, had pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide, a first-degree misdemeanor. Judge Tobin ordered she serve 90 days in the county jail starting Monday. She will be allowed to leave for work. She will also be on probation for three years, and her driver's license was suspended for three years. She was driving on county Road 410 in Butler Township on the afternoon of Dec. 5, 2004. Her car struck another car and killed a passenger in it, Scott B. Ewing, 29, of Minier, Ill.
Youth program benefit
YOUNGSTOWN -- A motorcycle run to benefit the community youth programs of Warriors Inc. will begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Warrior headquarters at 2733 Market St. in the Uptown. The registration donation is $10 per bike plus $5 for passengers. The ride is expected to end between 1:30 and 2 p.m., said spokeswoman Wendy Robinson. Food, prizes and music will be provided. Saturday fire exercise
NEW SPRINGFIELD -- Four fire departments will participate in a drill from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at 4122 E. Garfield Road here. Participating are New Middletown, Beaver and Springfield Township fire departments and Western Reserve Joint Fire District.
Motorcycle crash
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A Maitland Lane man was in critical condition Thursday evening at St. Elizabeth Health Center after a crash on his motorcycle. Pennsylvania State Police said Robert Oesterling, 76, was traveling south on Valley Road in Neshannock Township at 2:35 p.m. Thursday when he tried to stop and lost control of his motorcycle. Police said Jacqueline Wyant, 21, of Sunrise Drive had pulled from Sunrise Drive into the intersection and stopped when she saw Oesterling approaching. She had a stop sign and he did not, police said. Police said Oesterling's bike started sliding when he tried to stop and crashed into the car. Wyant and two passengers were not hurt.
School supply donations
AUSTINTOWN -- The Mahoning County Salvation Army is seeking school supply donations. A collection will be from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Saturday at the Wal-Mart store here. Donations will be used to stock backpacks for income eligible children in the Austintown School District. Items still needed include one-subject, wide-ruled notebooks, 4-ounce bottles of glue, glue sticks, 24 count box of crayons, plastic pencil boxes, child-safe scissors, erasers and pocket folders. Items also may be dropped off Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Salvation Army, 6431 Mahoning Ave.
Charges in May robbery
BOARDMAN -- Police arrested a second man charged in the May robbery of a Hillman Street discount store. Anthony "Ant" Anderson, 20, of Brooklyn Avenue, Youngstown, was arrested Wednesday on a warrant charging him with aggravated robbery. He is accused in the May 22 robbery of the Deals Store. He remains in the Mahoning County Jail. Police arrested Lamar E. Knox, 17, of East Florida Avenue, Youngstown, last month, charging him with the same offense.
