24-year-old dies after shooting on North Side
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 24-year-old man was killed on the North Side when someone opened fire on the vehicle he was riding in.
The shooting occurred shortly before 1 a.m. Wednesday. Markus Smith of Fruit Street died in St. Elizabeth Health Center from a gunshot wound to the back.
Police said Smith was in the front passenger seat of a vehicle traveling east on Crandall Avenue when the driver noticed they were being followed by a gray, newer model Chevrolet Impala.
The driver turned left onto Ohio Avenue and right onto Saranac Avenue, stopping at a red light at Elm Street. When the light turned green, the driver started to pull forward, and an unidentified person fired five or six shots at the vehicle, and one of the bullets hit Smith.
Additional details were not available from police Wednesday night.
Smith was taken by the driver to St. Elizabeth's emergency room, where he died while being treated.
