STRUTHERS -- Dylan Thomas, a 10th-grade honors student at Struthers High School, was selected to attend the National Young Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C., in June.
Dylan, who was elected junior class president for next year, has lettered in golf, tennis and bowling while maintaining a 4.0 grade point average.
He is a member of the yearbook staff, tutors students in math and works part time in the school district's technology department. He is the son of Michele and Danny Thomas Jr.
PSU Shenango instructorreceives teaching award
SHARON, Pa. -- Lisa Bertin of Mercer, instructor in information sciences and technology, was named recipient of the annual Leonard R. Riforgiato Memorial Teaching Award at Penn State Shenango.
The award is presented to a full-time faculty member nominated and recommended by both students and faculty.
Riforgiato was an associate professor in history and the first recipient of the Penn State Shenango Teaching Award. He died in 1999.
Bertin joined the faculty in 2001 and was hired as a full-time instructor in 2002. She serves on numerous student and faculty committees and is adviser to the students' computer and technology club.
She has a bachelor's degree from Youngstown State University in business administration and an executive master of business administration degree from Kent State University.
12 local students selectedas program delegates
GIRARD -- A dozen young men from Girard, Liberty, McDonald and Mineral Ridge high schools were selected by the DeWitt McConnell American Legion Post 235 to attend the 70th annual Buckeye Boys State program at Bowling Green State University in June.
The delegates are: Evan D. DeChant, Matthew R. Simeone and Jon-Michael A. Oliva of Girard; Michael A. Small, Eric S. Saddle, Patrick S. Shelton and Nicholas D. Hideg of Liberty; Bradley M. Hinton, Andrew W. Kunkel, John M. Jerome and John A. Yukabov of McDonald; and Ricardo A. Vidot of Mineral Ridge.
Salem wins academic title
SALEM -- Salem High School students captured the 2005-06 Academic Challenge title, beating last year's winner, Howland High School, in the final single elimination round. The educational quiz show has been broadcast by NewsChannel 33 for the past four years and is a partnership between Youngstown State University and the television station.
Team members, coached by Joe Shivers, are Connor, Brian, Joseph, Meredith and Paul Shivers, Annie Dombroski and James Drotleff.
The annual quiz show began in 2003 with nine high school teams and grew this past year to 36 teams. Stan Boney, Channel 33 meteorologist, is the host. The Salem team was victorious over 200 other students on teams from school districts in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties. The show will resume in September.
Preschool registration
WARREN -- Howland Community Church Cooperative Preschool, 198 Niles-Cortland Road S.E., is registering children for the 2006-07 school year.
Classes for 3- and 4-year-olds will be from 9:15 to 11:30 a.m. or 12:45 to 3 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Children must be at least 3 years old by Sept. 30 and potty trained.
A prekindergarten class is available for children who will be 5 years old and will not enter kindergarten in September. The class is scheduled from 12:45 to 3 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays.
The preschool fosters growth and development of young children to work and play together. The curriculum stresses beginning reading and math skills and basic science concepts.
The program also includes classes in music, creative movement, library and educational field trips. Classes for Gymsterdance, Kindermusik and Spanish also are available at an extra cost.
The program, which has been in the community for 37 years, is staffed by professionally trained and state-certified teachers.
