Service will honor Monsignor Adamiak
The honoree was ordained into the priesthood July 12, 1946, in Philadelphia.
AUSTINTOWN -- A service of thanksgiving will be at 4 p.m. July 16 at St. Anne Ukrainian Catholic Church Byzantine Rite, 4310 Kirk Road, to honor Monsignor Archpriest Leo Adamiak for the 60th anniversary of his ordination as a priest.
After the service, a buffet reception is planned at the church social hall.Attending will be hierarchy and clergy from Byzantine and Roman rites, nuns from the area and Knights of Columbus Council 274. The choirs of St. Anne and Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church, 526 W. Rayen Ave., Youngstown, will offer the liturgy responses under the direction of Marian Izak.
Monsignor Adamiak was born July 9, 1920, in Altoona, Pa., and attended public and parochial schools. He entered the minor seminary in 1937 at St. Basil's in Connecticut and later attended St. Charles in Catonsville, Md. He also attended St. Basil's College, Stamford, Conn., and the Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C.

He was ordained July 12, 1946, by the Most Rev. Constantine Bohachevsky at Immaculate Conception Cathedral, Philadelphia. After his ordination, Monsignor Adamiak served as a secretary to Bishop Bohachevsky and as pastor of St. Michael Church, Camden, N.J., from 1946-50.
He was named pastor of Holy Trinity on July 29, 1950, and served there through October, 2005. From 1966-75, Monsignor Adamiak also served as pastor at St. Anne Church.
At the two churches, Monsignor Adamiak was responsible for various projects.
At Holy Trinity, he was involved in the building of the rectory, the renovation of the church and the building of a shrine adjacent to the church featuring a cross 80 feet tall. In the 1990s, a church museum featuring artifacts and history was initiated, and other repairs and landscaping were undertaken.
At St. Anne, land was bought and the church complex was built. In 1966, the first Ukrainian Catholic parochial school opened.
Among honors that Monsignor Adamiak received are the title of papal chamberlain May 10, 1958, by Pope Pius XII; the title of prelate of honor Nov. 19, 1984, by Pope John Paul II; and the honorary title of mitered archpriest March 31, 1996, by Cardinal Myroslav Lubachivsky.
Monsignor Adamiak is temporarily at Park Vista; his residence is at the rectory at Holy Trinity. He retired Oct. 1, 2005, after 50 years of service. The Rev. Joseph Tamburro is now Holy Trinity pastor.
