YOUNGSTOWN -- Most Mahoning County property owners should see their second-half real estate tax bills in mailboxes next week, said county Treasurer John B. Reardon. The tax collection closes Aug. 4. Taxpayers who participate in the county's tax-installment plan, who prepay real estate taxes monthly, will be billed later this month.
Flushing fire hydrants
MINERAL RIDGE -- The Trumbull County Sanitary Engineer's Department will be flushing fire hydrants in the Mineral Ridge area Tuesday through Friday. This will result in some low pressure at times as well as discoloration of the water.
Council meeting reset
LOWELLVILLE -- Village council's meeting set for Tuesday has been changed to July 19. The meeting will be at 7 p.m. in council chambers.
Good Neighbor Grant
YOUNGSTOWN -- YWCA of Youngstown has been awarded a $5,000 Good Neighbor Grant from the Raymond John Wean Foundation. It will be used to fund summer enrichment programs for boys and girls ages 6 to 12 at the YWCA facility at 25 W. Rayen Ave. and at the YWCA Discovery Place West at 2007 S. Schenley Ave. in Austintown. The summer program, which runs through Aug. 18, includes lessons in art, sports, games and computers, and weekly field trips to the zoo, bowling, swimming, the library and an animal park. Extended child care is available Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Scholarships are available for the program to families in financial need. To apply, call (330) 746-6361.
Water activities planned
CORTLAND -- Trumbull Soil and Water Conservation District will host a Project WET workshop from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 3 at the Trumbull Agriculture and Family Education Center here. Project WET is a collection of water-related activities that are hands on and easy to use by students. It is designed for teachers, home-schoolers and Scout and youth leaders. The cost is $25 and includes materials, lunch and refreshments. To register, call (330) 637-2056.
Mosquito spraying set
HOWLAND -- The township will spray for mosquitos from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday and Tuesday. In case of rain, the spraying will take place the following days. Residents are urged to close their windows, keep pets indoors and not leave any food outdoors during the spraying. This will be the third spraying of the year by Alexander Pest Control.
Mosquito killing in Niles
NILES -- The city will spray for mosquitos after 6 p.m. July 19. If it rains that day, spraying will be done July 20. People with respiratory problems should remain indoors with the windows closed, and all pets should be taken indoors. Also, food should not be outside during the spraying period.
OVI checkpoint planned
The Trumbull County OVI (Operating a Vehicle Impaired) Task Force will have a sobriety checkpoint at an undisclosed site in the county from 4 to 8 p.m. today. Kim Peters, task force coordinator, said officers will be conducting a roadside check of drivers for alcohol and drug impairment. Task force police departments also will be conducting saturation patrols to target impaired drivers. Funding for the OVI Task Force is provided by a grant from the Ohio Department of Public Safety, Governors Highway Safety Office.
Extra schooling for kids
LISBON -- Columbiana County commissioners approved a contract Friday to provide extra education this summer to some pupils in kindergarten through grade four. The county Department of Job and Family Services received $32,125 in federal money for the program. It will allow 40 pupils in the Leetonia district and 35 in the Southern Local School District to attend 20 hours of extra schooling a week. The program is designed to help pupils pass state proficiency tests.
Author heads to Valley
YOUNGSTOWN -- Author Laura Lippman will speak at 7 p.m. Aug. 26 at the main branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County on Wick Avenue. Admittance is free. Lippman, author of "No Good Deeds," is author of 14 crime and mystery novels. She attended Northwestern University and majored in journalism. She works for a Baltimore newspaper and writes about one novel a year.
