Historical society to sponsor talk by activist

The event will include lunch and tours of the historic house and gardens.
NILES -- Niles Historical Society will sponsor a midsummer Luncheon on the Lawn at 2:30 p.m. July 29 on the grounds of the Ward-Thomas Museum, 503 Brown St.
The featured speaker will be Elizabeth Cole Clark of Warren, a community activist.
Clark will speak about the life of Harriet Taylor Upton, who played a vital role in gaining women's rights to vote, own property, become educated and keep money they earned or inherited.
Her talk will cover the beginning of the struggle for women's rights during the Revolutionary War and the development of the Constitution, and show how that struggle shifted to involvement in the movement to abolish slavery. She will also discuss Constitutional amendments and those who opposed them.
Clark is the head of the education department for the Upton House Association and gives talks about the Upton legacy to hundreds of students each year. She is a docent for the Butler Institute of American Art and is involved in numerous civic activities.
Clark retired in 1991 after teaching world history and American history for 28 years in Howland schools.
