Firefighters secure gas leaks near demolition

BRACEVILLE -- Residents living in the Braceville-Robinson Road area of Braceville Township had a scare Friday as firefighters investigated two separate fuel leaks.
Capt. Ross McCartney of the Braceville Fire Department said crews were called out early Friday when residents living near a LaBrae school being demolished on Braceville-Robinson Road complained of a gas odor.
McCartney said demolition crews had likely punctured an above-ground fuel tank on the site. The tank, he said, held diesel fuel.
Firefighters, while investigating the above-ground leak, found a second leak in an underground storage tank holding gasoline.
According to McCartney, a specialty company removed about 900 gallons of gasoline from the underground tank. Firefighters sealed the above-ground tank.
McCartney said firefighters had both leaks under control by 10 p.m.
