Astro Falcons earn two victories; Mink wins, 3-2
Five area teams are participating in the double-elimination event.
STRUTHERS -- The Astro Falcons posted two wins Saturday in the 11-team Mickey Mantle baseball tournament at Cene Park.
Ten games were contested in the first day of the double-elimination tournament that drew five area teams. Action continues today.
Astro Falcons won their second straight with a 9-8 victory over the Heights Titans.
Mike Kelly had three hits while Tren Valinger and Jared Turocy had two doubles each. Ryan Rovnak added two singles for Astros while Brian Fox went the distance for the win.
Kirby Becker, Matt Salacienski and Alex Johnson all had two hits for Heights.
Heights Titans 7, Livi Steel 4
Kyle Kapolka had three hits and four RBIs and went the first 5 2/3 innings to get the win.
Kirby Becker, Matt Rosinski and Alex Johnson added two hits each, with Ryan Hanson picking up the save.
Matt Kirkwood had a single and a double, and losing pitcher Zach Cuffman added two hits for Livi. Cuffman went the distance in the loss.
Mink Financial 3,Jefferson Baseball Academy 2
Brad Bates tossed a three-hitter with eight strikeouts for Mink. Ryan Gruszecki drove home a run and scored one with a triple in the two-run second inning.
Korey Leonard had two hits for Jefferson while Matt Freeman went the distance and had five strikeouts in the loss.
Glove Masters 7,Dave Sugar Excavating 2
Jordan Gribble, Sean Bedevelsky, Andrew Nemecek, Brett Reardon and Geoff Palya had two hits each Glove Masters, which had 13 hits.
Bedevelsky went four innings for the win. Geoff Palya tossed three innings of one-hit ball for the save.
Jonathan Brady and Justin Gorgacz had doubles for Dave Sugar.
R & amp; J Trucking 7, Dave Sugar 6
Dan Banna singled home the go ahead run in the top of the ninth for R & amp; J.
Mark Lapikas had four hits, three of them triples for the winners. Matt Durkin had three hits and Banna and Bob Herberger two each.
Rich Curry had a triple and a double and Dustin Blakeman two singles for Sugar.
Wayne County 12, Livi Steel 3
Wayne County took advantage of 11 walks to eliminate Livi.
Bryce Mathis went the distance with three strikeouts while Andrew Hackworth and Cullen Bahler had two hits each for the winners. Dom Lapolla had an RBI triple for Livi Steel.
Wadsworth Wildcats 4,R & amp; J Trucking 2
Wadsworth scored two times in both the fourth and fifth innings to defeat R & amp; J.
Matt Fritz, Jake Palidar and winning pitcher Mike Hoover had two hits each. Hoover went the distance allowing only four singles and no earned runs. Dan Banna had an RBI single for R & amp; J.
Astro Falcons 3,Wayne Co. Junior Legion 1
Astro Falcons got a three-hit, 10-strikeout performance from Jason Simons.
Mike Kelly had two hits while Craig Ripley had two of the three hits for Wayne County. Tim Ratzel went the distance in defeat with two strikeouts.
