Students beat one another on football field

LONDON, Ohio (AP) -- Nine people have been charged in a fight that broke out at a campout on a high school football field in which seniors and former students beat each other with baseball bats, shovels and pipes.
The nine were charged on Monday with misdemeanors ranging from underage consumption of alcohol to disorderly conduct and assault. A grand jury last month declined to indict anyone on felony charges.
Students suffered broken bones and black eyes during the brawl on the Madison-Plains football field on June 1. One person was in the hospital for two days.
The campers were seniors or former students at Madison-Plains or London high schools, about 25 miles west of Columbus.
School administrators sanctioned the event the previous eight years, with supervision from parents and faculty. This year, students didn't ask to hold the event so officials did not think it would happen.
The campout had not caused problems in the past, so when administrators noticed about 50 students on the field they let them stay.
The nine are to appear in Municipal Court Aug. 2.
