Notebook | Scrappers vs. Doubledays
Quick game: Wednesday's 5-1 victory over the Doubledays was the Scrappers' quickest game of the season, taking just 1 hour and 59 minutes. It was one of the Scrappers' rare games that lasted less than two hours. Mahoning Valley manager Rouglas Odor said he thought the game was pretty quick, but still not as quick as a game he had while coaching at Burlington in the Rookie League. "It was 1 hour and 45 minutes," Odor said.
Good pitching: One of the reasons for the Scrappers' success has been their excellent pitching, especially their starting pitching. Nick Pesco went six innings Wednesday night without allowing a run. This year the Scrappers are ranked No. 2 in team pitching in the New York-Penn League statistics with a 2.73 ERA, behind Aberdeen's 1.99. Pesco is tied for second in individual ERA with 0.50 in 18 innings, while relievers Neil Wagner (3 saves) and Luis Valdez (17 strikeouts) are also among the top five in each category.Near the top: Infielder Andy Lytle moved up to second in the individual batting race in the New York-Penn League with a .418 average. Lytle also leads the league in hits (28) and is tied for third in stolen bases (5). He has had 10 multi-hit games. Two other Scrappers are also among the top hitters in the NYPL. Third baseman Jared Goedert is at .383 after starting the season 1-for-12, and catcher Kelly Edmundson is batting .321.Tonight's starter: Michael Eisenberg, the Scrappers' eighth-round draft pick out of Marietta College, will make his fourth start of the season tonight against the Doubledays. Sunday, Eisenberg was touched for three runs in four innings at Auburn, but he was pitching with a touch of the flu. He allowed just one run in each of the first two starts this season, but as yet has had no decisions. This beer's for you: The Scrappers held their first "Buck a Beer" night at Eastwood Field and the response was just what the team needed as 4,593 turned out to root the team and tip a few. Every Thursday when the Scrappers are home, Radio station 93.3 WNCD sponsors the promotion.
