Wednesday's Best Bets on TV
"Edge of Outside" (8 p.m., Turner Classic Movies): This documentary explores the spirit and vision of independent filmmakers. The documentary dispels the notion that an independent film is just a movie with a bare-bones budget. It features interviews with Martin Scorsese, Peter Falk, Spike Lee, Arthur Penn, Gena Rowlands and John Sayles. It's followed by three films by celebrated independent filmmaker John Cassavetes: "Faces" (1968) at 9:15 p.m.; "A Woman Under the Influence" (1974) at 12:45 a.m.; and "A Child is Waiting" (1963) at 3:30 a.m.
"Rock Star: Supernova" (8 p.m., CBS): Legendary rockers pick the final member of their new band, Supernova, from among a legion of hitherto unknowns in the second season of the unscripted competition series. Supernova's current members Tommy Lee (Motley Crue), Jason Newsted (Metallica) and Gilby Clarke (Guns N' Roses) join former Jane's Addiction rocker Dave Navarro to judge the cadre of crooners competing to be the group's lead singer. The series' second episode is broadcast Thursday at 9 p.m. Next week, the show moves to its twice-weekly regular time slots: Tuesday at 9 p.m. and Wednesday at 8 p.m.
