Salem recycling center site sought
SALEM -- The director of the Carroll-Columbiana-Harrison Joint Solid Waste District wants Salem city officials to find a site on city-owned land for a 24-hour recycling station.
Chris Jacob, solid waste district director, told city council Wednesday the city and Perry Township are the only areas in the solid waste district that don't have at least one 24-hour recycling station operated by the district. Jacob said many area residents have requested a site in Salem.
Some council members questioned Jacob about problems the solid waste district has encountered at recycling sites. Council members said city officials canned a city-run facility in the 1990s because of ongoing problems with overflow and people leaving garbage and large items around the bins.
He said workers will empty the bins three times a week, and other employees will check the bins twice a week for cleanliness and to ensure there is no overflow or unwanted items.
He said a contract for recycling between the city and the solid waste district would be ongoing. Built into the contract, however, is a 30-day notification provision from the city to the solid waste district if the city is not satisfied with the service, he said.
