More from Eastwood Field
Field a mess: The combination of Monday's David Lee Roth concert and Tuesday's heavy rains left Eastwood Field in a sorry mess Wednesday morning. "We actually had equipment floating on the field, there was so much water," assistant general manager Jim Riley said. A truck from the concert got stuck in the infield and made a mess. The Scrappers even brought in a helicopter to help dry up the field in time for Wednesday night's game. Scrappers GM Dave Smith gave high praise to the team's ground crew for all their efforts to get the field back into playing condition. "We had to bring in a tanker truck and siphon more than 2,500 gallons of water off the field," Smith said.
Coming and going: Right-handed pitcher Jason Schutt was transferred from Mahoning Valley to Class A Lake County on July 1. Schutt was 0-1 with two saves and a 1.80 ERA in four outings and five innings. He struck out six. The Scrappers also signed a non-drafted free agent pitcher, right-hander Hart Hering out of Texas A & amp;M. The 23-year old has made two appearances for the Scrappers, throwing two shutout innings. At Texas A & amp;M, he was 2-1 with a 2.81 ERA in 32 appearances, all out of the bullpen.
Who's on first? Scrappers manager Rouglas Odor continues to mix up his starting lineups. He had used 15 different lineups going into Wednesday's contest with Auburn. Outfielder Brent Thomas made his season debut on Tuesday in Auburn going 0-for-2.
Leading the way: Scrappers infielder/designated hitter Andy Lytle has hit safely in all but three games this season and was third in the New York-Penn League hitting stats with a .413 average. Wednesday's starting pitcher Nick Pesko, the right-hander on rehab from Akron, had allowed just one earned run in his first 12 innings, good for second best in the league. Lytle is third in hitting, first in hits (26) and tied for third in stolen bases (5).
Starts in field: Scrappers' second round draft pick Matt McBride, who has been used only as a designated hitter this year because of a shoulder injury, will make his first start behind the plate tonight against the Doubledays.
Helping hand: Mahoning Valley has now gone only three games this season without making an error and has allowed nine unearned runs in their first 15 games.
Today's starter: Right-hander J.D. Martin will be making his fourth start for the Scrappers on rehab from the Class AA Akron Aeros. Martin, coming off Tommy John surgery, has allowed one run over his first three starts, which included three innings in each of the three.
