Expert play and defense can be beautiful to watch. Consider this deal, featuring one of the world's all-time great players, Benito Garozzo of Italian Blue Team fame, and England's Marc Smith.
After West's opening bid and North's no-trump overcall, Garozzo's two hearts was a transfer to spades, and the rest of the auction was natural. North decided to allow South to play in his second suit.
West led the king of clubs, East following with the deuce, and declarer had three sure losers -- two diamonds and a spade. He had to bring in the trump suit without losing a trick. Garozzo won the first trick with dummy's ace of clubs and led a diamond to the eight, queen and ace. A diamond was returned to East's king and East reverted to a club, ruffed in the closed hand.
Declarer led a heart to dummy's jack and East, Smith, made the expert play of the nine. Declarer now had a choice of plays in the trump suit -- he could either play to drop the king or come to hand and lead the queen, hoping to pin East's ten.
South decided to find out more about the distribution. He ruffed another club in hand. Declarer now decided that West held nine minor-suit cards and so continued with a heart to the ace, felling the king.
After cashing dummy's diamond winner, he took the ace and king of spades and exited with a spade to East's queen. If East returned a trump, declarer would score the last two tricks with the high trump and winning spade.
If he returned a diamond, declarer would ruff in dummy, discarding his spade, and score the fulfilling trick with the queen of trumps.
