Readers share romantic wedding proposals
Dear Readers: Around Valentine's Day, we printed a column about romantic wedding proposals and shared some stories from Heloise Central. We asked our readers to share their proposal stories, and here are just a few of the thousands we received:
Glynn Cooksey of Palestine, Texas, says: "My hobby is saltwater aquariums. I ordered a bunch of fish, and the day they arrived, I set it up for my girlfriend, Raven, to come and see. She didn't know that peeking out of the sand was a ring. She began looking at the new fish, and something sparkled and caught her eye. 'Oh my gosh!' is all she could say, and there I was on my knee."
Victoria Clendenon, via e-mail, says: "My husband did not propose -- his dog did. My husband had sent me 11 long-stemmed roses at the office. He and the dog were waiting at my house that afternoon. The dog had the 12th rose attached to his collar with a note saying, 'It's not puppy love, will you marry me?' Of course I said yes, and we now have four dogs and two cats for children."
Diane Miller of Simi Valley, Calif., says: "My husband of almost 13 years, Ken, proposed to me at the wishing well at Disneyland at exactly 12 noon with the song 'I'm Wishing' playing in the background. That is where we first met, five years earlier."
Ralph Wallis of Bentonville, Ark., says: "It was 62 years ago on a campus radio station that my date and I did a program. After a few humorous news bits and some interludes of music, I got the control-room operator to play a song. Then I popped the question right out over the air, and she said yes."
Deborah F. Hutto of Columbia, S.C., says: "After dating only two months, my husband proposed by saying, 'If you're not doing anything for the next 30 years, would you spend them with me?' I have a laugh each year on our anniversary when I announce how many more years I have to go before reaching 30. We will celebrate our 19th anniversary this year!"
L. Ashcraft of Springfield, Ill., says: "On Christmas Eve, my then-boyfriend was eating a box of glazed popcorn [with the prize in the bottom]. When he came to the prize package, he asked if I wanted it. You could not tell that it had been tampered with, but when I tore it open, my engagement ring was inside. We have been married for almost 29 years!"
Barbara Kroe of Mission Viejo, Calif., says: "My boyfriend knew I loved the long pretzel rods and always looked for the one with the most salt. He brought me a bagful, and when I picked the one with the most salt, there was an engagement ring placed through the end of the pretzel. Now a few months short of 50 years, it is fun to remember."
All lovely, and some unusual, stories with happy endings! Heloise
