Pittsburgh to lead study of AIDS preventions
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- City researchers will lead the study of various women's health care products designed to halt the spread of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.
Magee-Womens Research Institute has been picked to head a Microbicide Trials Network being funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. That agency is part of the National Institutes of Health.
The researchers will test various foams, gels, creams, sponges and other products designed to stop the spread of HIV in women through heterosexual intercourse.
Magee is affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh. Other researchers are from the University of Washington, UCLA, and Family Health International in North Carolina.
