YOUNGSTOWN -- Habitat for Humanity of Mahoning County recently elected executive board members and committee leaders. The board meets at 7 p.m. the third Monday of each month at St. John's Episcopal Church, 323 Wick Ave. Board members are Steve Hanzely, president; Chester DeMart, vice president; Howard Friend, secretary; Matt Morgan, treasurer. Leading committees will be Kris Geren, family selection; Joan Johnston, family support; Denise Johnson and Jennifer Titus, church relations; Steve Hanzely, resource development; John Burgan, site selection; Bill Schroeder, construction; Chester DeMart, public relations. Brian Burick, executive director, said Habitat for Humanity partners with low-income families to build houses those families can afford to purchase. He said volunteers are always welcome to help build houses or to assist with clerical work.
Quarry Road closed
POLAND -- Quarry Road will be closed from 6 p.m. to midnight July 12-15 from Kennedy Road to the Lowellville village limits for the 111th annual Mount Carmel Celebration. Quarry Road also will be closed from 10 a.m. until the end of the celebration's procession July 16. Traffic will be detoured along Kennedy and Struthers roads and U.S. Route 224.
Nursing grant awarded
WARREN -- The Raymond John Wean Foundation recently awarded a Good Neighbor Grant of $15,000 to The Visiting Nurse Association of the Greater Youngstown Area. The grant will be used in the agency's geriatric program, which offers services such as routine laboratory tests, pre-filling of medications, and medical assessments in the client's home by a staff nurse. The Visiting Nurse Association is a United Way, nonprofit home health-care agency.
Baby sitter training
BOARDMAN -- The Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross will offer a baby sitter training course July 18 and 20. The course will be at the Davis Family YMCA, McClurg Road, from 3 to 6 p.m. The course is open to boys and girls between the ages of 11 and 15.
The program teaches infant and child care, safety and safe play, leadership, responsibility, and professionalism, as well as first-aid training and several lifesaving techniques.
Upon completion of the course, each student will receive a baby-sitting certification, a baby-sitting training manual, an "I'm Certified American Red Cross Baby-sitter" T-shirt, 30 business cards and other items. Call (330) 480-5658 for enrollment information.
Service charge proposal
HARRISBURG -- Those who write bad checks in Pennsylvania could face a service charge of $50 under legislation sponsored by Rep. Dick Stevenson, R-Mercer/Butler and passed by the Pennsylvania House of Representatives last week. House Bill 2590 allows individuals, organizations and businesses to charge a service fee of $50 when a bad check has been passed to them. Current law allows a service charge of $20. The legislation now moves to the state Senate for consideration.
