Q. Vulnerable, you hold:
A K J 10 5 A 10 7 4 K 8 6 7
Your right-hand opponent opens the bidding with one diamond. What action do you take?
A. Double, to bring both majors into play. Should partner bid two clubs, you are just strong enough to bid two spades.
Q. Neither vulnerable, as South you hold:
J 8 6 5 A K Q Void A Q 9 8 5 2
The bidding has proceeded:
EAST SOUTH WEST NORTH

Pass Dbl Pass 2
Pass ?
What action do you take?
A. You have forced a heart bid from partner, and there is a slight chance that he might have only three cards in the suit. Prudence dictates a retreat to three clubs.

What action do you take?
A. With a hand that will produce seven tricks for partner at no trump, it would be pusillanimous not to raise partner to three no trump.

What do you bid now?
A. Partner is probing for slam with his cue-bids despite the fact that he is missing the ace of diamonds -- he could have cue-bid five diamonds if he held that card. Bid seven spades.
Q. Vulnerable, you hold:
K Q J 10 9 5 2 K Q 4 10 K Q
Partner opens the bidding with one club. What do you respond?
A. Jump to four no trump. Should partner show only one ace, discuss with him what constitutes an opening bid!
Q. East-West vulnerable, as South you hold:
A K 10 9 4 J 9 8 5 3 8 7 3
The bidding has proceeded:
WEST NORTH EAST SOUTH

What do you bid now?
A. There are two ways to tackle this problem. One is to pre-empt with a jump to five or six diamonds in the hope of keeping the opponents out of the auction. The other is to make a lead-directing bid of three hearts now and then defend against six spades should the opponents get there. We like the latter course.
