1 down, 5 to go vs. Doubledays
Mahoning Valley lost to Auburn, 7-4, to drop to 6-7.
AUBURN, N.Y. -- A three-run fifth inning proved to be the difference Sunday as the Auburn Doubledays turned back the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, 7-4.
Auburn remains atop the Pinckney Division of the New York-Penn League standings with a 7-5 record while the Scrappers (6-7) are 11/2 games off the pace.
More to come
The two teams will play again the next five days, today and Tuesday in Auburn before traveling to Eastwood Field in Niles for a three-game series beginning Wednesday.
The Scrappers scored first. With two away in the top of the first inning, Jared Goedert hit his first homer of the season to left field.
The Doubledays wasted little time, scoring a run in the last of the first inning when Benjamin Zaskind doubled and came home on a double-play groundball.
In the third, the Scrappers took a 3-1 lead. With Adam Davis and Evandy De Leon in scoring position, Andrew Lytle doubled to left to plate the pair.
However, Auburn tied it in the last of the third when Michael Eisenberg threw two wild pitches allowing two Doubledays' runners to come in.
The first two Auburn hitters of the fifth inning walked and a bunt was misplayed, allowing a man to score.
A single produced two more runs and a 6-3 lead.
The Scrappers scored again in the eighth. Goedert doubled, went to third on a wild pitch and came home on a groundout.
Goedert and Stephen Douglas each had two hits for Mahoning Valley.
The game drew a crowd of 1,540.
