YSU suffers another road loss

The Penguins dropped an 81-67 Horizon League contest to Wright State.
DAYTON -- The Youngstown State men's basketball team just can't put two good games together on the road. Monday night the Penguins dropped an 81-67 contest to Wright State at the Nutter Center.
The Penguins shot 50 percent from the field on the night, but defensively couldn't stop the Raiders' DeShaun Wood, who had a career-high 35-point performance, as Wright State improved to 9-10 overall and 5-4 in the Horizon League.
YSU (7-13, 4-6) was coming off an impressive road win at Cleveland State on Saturday, is 2-9 on the road this season.
Raiders led all way
Wright State, which snapped a four-game losing streak, never trailed in the contest and led by as many as 13 points in the first half and 19 in the second half.
"We played very poorly tonight and rebounded very poorly," said YSU coach Jerry Slocum.
"After getting a taste of winning on the road I had hoped there would be some consistency in our play, but it never happened tonight," he added.
"We lost the game in the first half," he said.
"We made [Wood] look like an All-American tonight. He's good, but not that good."
"It takes a lot of energy to make a big comeback and we just didn't have it left tonight," Slocum said.
Four in double figures
The Penguins did put four players in double figures, led by junior Quin Humphrey with 15 points, while Domonique Crawford added 14 off the bench and Derrick Harris had 13.
Sophomore John Barber had his first double-double of his career as he added 12 points and 12 rebounds.
The Penguins hit on 23-of-46 shots from the field and were 5-of-15 from 3-point range, making all five in the second half.
They were outrebounded 33-25 by the Raiders.
After the Penguins tied the game at 2-2, the Raiders took control and never trailed again.
The pulled to a 14-4 margin at the 14:40 mark and increased that to 29-16 with just under six minutes remaining on a 3-pointer by Wood.
The Penguins got the lead down to nine points (32-23) when Crawford came off the bench to score six of his 14 points, but the Raiders pulled back into a 42-26 lead at the intermission.
Biggest margin
The Raiders increased their lead to 19 points at 50-31 and still led by 18 points (57-39) with just over 11 minutes left in the game.
YSU battled back and cut the Raiders lead to nine points, the final time at 76-67 with 1:55 remaining, but never got any closer.
The Penguins return home for a one-game stand Thursday night when they play host to Illinois-Chicago in a 7:35 tip-off. The YSU women will entertain Butler in the opening game of the doubleheader at 5:15.
