January 31, 1981: Cleanup of toxic chemical wastes dumped at the Summit National Services disposal site in Deerfield Township should begin as soon as the state can hire contractors to do the job. Nine of 50 companies responsible for contaminating the Portage County dump have agreed to pay more than $420,000 toward the estimated $10 million cost of digging up and removing buried wastes.

The Medical Service Foundation launches a vigorous protest against a recommendation that the county cease paying $1.35 a day per indigent patient to Mahoning County doctors. Such a recommendation was made to county commissioners by the Mahoning County Welfare Advisory Board.
