Man pleads guilty, apologizes to woman

LISBON -- A man apologized after the woman he tried to kill said she will suffer from her injuries for the rest of her life.
Gary L. Call Sr., 62, of Toronto, Ohio, had pleaded guilty to attempted murder and kidnapping of his girlfriend, Susan Kelly, on May 11, 2004.
Call drove her to the Highlandtown Dam in southern Columbiana County, choked her, beat her with a club and threw her body over a hill. Call told authorities Kelly was "on him" about an unspecified issue and he couldn't take it any more.
Call, a large man, later told authorities he thought he had killed Kelly, a petite woman.
"I'm sorry for Susan. I wish I could change things," Call said.
Common Pleas Court Judge C. Ashley Pike sentenced Call to two concurrent 10 year sentences. Call will get credit for 634 days he has spent in the county jail.
Kelly told the judge, "I will live with this for the rest of my life."
Kelly also said she has nightmares, "and cries all the time."
Patty Ohler, the victim's sister, said in court that Kelly spent a month in the hospital after the assault, needs hearing aids and has seizures because of her injuries.
"She'll never be right," Ohler said.
