Explosive mars deck of covered bridge

CONFLUENCE, Pa. (AP) -- A crude homemade explosive stained the wooden deck of a century-old bridge in Somerset County, but otherwise didn't affect the structure.
The device was found Jan. 22 on the deck of the 115-year-old Lower Humbert Covered Bridge in Lower Turkeyfoot Township. Built in 1891, the bridge is considered one of the area's most picturesque.
State police said they are investigating the explosion.
"My crime unit's working on it aggressively," Sgt. John Rock said.
Dave Ansell found an empty container of toilet bowl cleaner, a shattered vodka bottle, a rolled-up wad of aluminum foil and a soda can full of BBs on the deck of the bridge.
"This scared the heck out of me," Ansell said. "Not only did they try to burn it down -- they tried to blow it up."
