2 scholarships to be memorial to student

HEBRON, Ohio (AP) -- A dodgeball tournament helped students in central Ohio raise $2,000 for scholarship funds created in honor of a classmate killed in a farm accident.
Two students at Lakewood High School, about 25 miles east of Columbus, organized Saturday's tournament to remember Joe Parrish, 16, who was killed in July when he sank into soybeans stored in a grain bin and suffocated under the crop's weight.
"He was such a great guy, and we don't want him to be forgotten," said T.J. Lyons, one of the organizers. About 300 players participated in the inaugural event.
Each six-person team paid $30 to enter.
The $2,000 raised through the entry fees and admission will be used toward two scholarships created in Parrish's honor.
One will be awarded this spring to a graduating Lakewood senior and another to a participant at a local fair, where Parrish showed farm animals.
The students said they hope to raise an additional $3,000 selling T-shirts and wristbands at school.
Parrish's father, Ed Parrish, said he enjoyed seeing the students having fun.
"It's a great lesson for these kids about what's important: unity and life and living it to the fullest," he said.
