Tax bills to arrive soon

Formal complaints related to property tax bills must be filed by March 31.
WARREN -- Trumbull County property owners will be receiving their tax bills around the end of this month and will have until March 6 to pay them, county officials said.
Christ Michelakis, Trumbull County treasurer, said the March 6 date is used for payment so that property owners on Social Security have two Social Security checks available before their taxes have to be paid.
Adrian Biviano, interim county auditor, said he encourages residents with questions about the bills to call his office for an informal review at (330) 675-2420.
They also have the option to file a complaint with the Board of Revision by March 31. There is no fee for filing. Complaint forms are available from the auditor's office in the county administration building or can be obtained by mail by calling the auditor's office.
Reappraisals
Because the county conducted a reappraisal of properties last year, the auditor's office sent out letters to property owners late last year giving them a description of their properties and the new valuations so that they could make sure the reappraisal had correct information, Biviano said. The auditor's office also had extended evening hours so residents could ask questions.
Biviano said residents should remember that the tax bills reflect the additional amount of taxes that were approved by voters in addition to the amount coming from the increased value of properties.
Officials have said the county average increase in residential property values over the period covered by the revaluation was 10.35 percent. The increase of property owners' taxes is much less than that, officials explained, because the increase is based on 35 percent of the increase and only on the first 10 mills. It is also reduced by reduction credits, a rollback and other reductions.
