Taaffe returns as acting principal

Several softball and baseball coaches also were named.
CANFIELD -- A familiar face will return to C.H. Campbell Elementary School.
At a special meeting Friday, school board members named Richard Taaffe, acting principal for the school for the rest of the school year. Taaffe previously served in that capacity before retiring.
He will fill the post being vacated by Sharon Ickes, who is retiring effective March 1. Ickes has worked in the district for about 13 years.
Taaffe will be paid $150 per day for the position. The board plans to hire a permanent replacement after this school year.
The board also named Alexis Novotny a coach for the high school girls junior varsity softball team. She will earn $999 in the position. Kara D'Amico was appointed a volunteer softball coach. Both women work as tutors in the school district.
The board also named several nonschool employees to coaching posts.
Katie Serensky of Berlin Center will earn about $2,300 as the coach for both the junior varsity and the freshman softball teams. George Naples of Canfield will earn $1,900 as a junior varsity and freshman softball coach.
Brian Finnegan of Canfield and Al Thorne of Youngstown were each named coaches for the junior varsity and freshman baseball teams and will both earn about $2,500 for both jobs.
Dan Frazzini, Tim Kelty and Joe Mikolay, all of Canfield, each will earn $518 as freshman baseball coaches.
Todd Thorne of Youngstown, a brother of Al Thorne, will be a volunteer baseball coach.
All of the nonlicensed extracurricular positions are for one-year contracts.
